So the other day I’m digging through my old soccer gear and find this totally wrecked ball from 2010. Got me thinking, man, that 2014 World Cup ball had some slick colors. Figured why not try and grab one now, keep it for display? Started poking around without a clue where to look.
The Online Rabbit Hole
First thing I did was hop online. Searched for that ball name – you know the one, with the cool star pattern and those bright greens and yellows. Tons of sites popped up selling “match balls” right away.

Decided screens weren’t cutting it. Grabbed my keys and hit every sports store in town – the big chains, the local places, even some random hobby shops.
- First big chain store guy just laughed at me. Said trying to find the official 2014 model now was “like asking for yesterday’s rain.”

- Comes back holding THE ball. Official markings stamped on it and everything. Box was a bit battered, but the ball looked almost new.
My jaw dropped. Asked him the price.
“Name’s Jimmy. Been sitting here years,” he says. “Always knew someone keen would find it. Got it for… let’s see…” He named a number. Still not cheap, way above retail from ten years back, but actually less than some of those wild online scalpers were asking.
Thought about it for maybe five seconds. Yeah, it hurt the wallet. But holding the real thing? Didn’t even hesitate. Paid him cash right there.
Drove home feeling like I’d found treasure. But honestly?
Biggest takeaway? Hunting down decade-old official gear is pure madness.

- If you actually find one for a price that doesn’t make you faint, buy it fast. Luck like that doesn’t happen twice.
