I got curious yesterday after watching some old World Cup highlights and thought, “Hey, what happened to all those German guys who won in 2014?” So I grabbed my laptop and decided to hunt down every player from that final lineup.

Starting the player search
First I pulled up the official 2014 final starting XI from my memory – Neuer, Lahm, Hummels, Boateng, Höwedes, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Özil, Müller and Klose. Wrote them all down in a messy list on my notepad app. Then I realized I totally forgot the bench guys like Götze who scored the winner! Had to go back and add all 23 squad members.
The detective work begins
Started with Manuel Neuer since he’s obvious. Google showed he’s still at Bayern but broken his leg snowboarding! Insane. For Philipp Lahm, I remembered he retired early but had to check – yep, he’s running charities and business stuff now. Schweinsteiger came up easy on Instagram coaching youth teams in Chicago. But man, some guys were tough. Benedikt Höwedes? Zero recent news until I dug into German newspapers – turns out he quit football and sells luxury real estate!
Most surprising finds:
- Miroslav Klose coaches Austrian club SCR Altach (who even knew that team?)
- Matthias Ginter plays for SC Freiburg after bouncing around three clubs
- Shkodran Mustafi became a TV pundit after getting released
Hitting dead ends
Got stuck on Erik Durm for hours. Searched everywhere – his Wikipedia hadn’t been updated since 2020. Finally found his current club Kaiserslautern buried in a third-tier sports forum. Kevin Großkreutz was wild – multiple sources said he retired after partying too hard!
Putting it together
Spent like four hours cross-checking everything. Made a big spreadsheet showing where all 23 players landed. Shockingly:
- Only THREE still play top-flight football (Neuer, Müller, Gündogan)
- Seven became coaches or managers
- Five completely left football
Felt kinda sad seeing heroes like Bastian Schweinsteiger with grey hair now. Time flies man. But it was awesome finishing my research – like solving a puzzle. Might do Spain 2010 next!
