Why watch player stats? It ain’t fancy charts

Had this West Ham vs Chelsea decider coming up. Figured I’d write something useful instead of them lazy “who’s gonna win?” posts everyone copies. Grabbed my old notebook where I scribble match notes – the paper one with coffee stains.

First thing? Went back through last three head-to-head games. Wrote down:

  • How many shots each key player took
  • Where their passes mostly went (left/right/long ball crap)
  • Who kept losing the damn ball in midfield

Checked my streaming app replays when I couldn’t remember specifics. Fast-forwarded till I saw yellow jerseys clashing – took screenshots when players made stupid tackles or genius moves. Skipped all the boring midfield circling.

Big realization halfway: Chelsea’s fullbacks kept getting roasted in speed last season. Pulled up their sprint stats since August. Sure enough – opposition wingers consistently outrun them by 2km/h+. Highlighted that in my notes with neon marker.

Then the annoying part – cross-checking injury reports from six different sources. Club tweets are useless PR fluff. Had to dig into fan forums and local press to see who actually trained yesterday.

Finally sat down typing at 11PM with cold pizza. Important: Only included stats that actually changed game outcomes before. Didn’t give a crap about possession percentages or pass accuracy – focused on who shoots when angry and who crumbles under pressure.

Almost trashed the whole thing when West Ham’s injury news changed this morning. Just drank more coffee and rewrote two sections before hitting publish. Done. Not perfect but tells you what actually matters.
