Getting Started
Okay, so last night I had this thought while watching football highlights. Tottenham played Forest recently, right? Bit of a nail-biter near the end. I figured, wouldn’t it be cool to build my own timeline showing exactly when all the big stuff happened – goals, cards, subs, that wild disallowed goal? Just a simple scroll through the match flow. Sounded straightforward enough, but I knew I needed stuff to show the moments visually.

First step was obvious: I needed data. Remembering where things happened. I grabbed my phone like usual, but staring at the little screen trying to note down the minute Watkins scored felt clumsy. Missed a sub note immediately, got annoyed. Put the phone down. Figured pen and paper might be faster for just scribbling key minutes without juggling apps. Grabbed a notepad from the kitchen drawer – slightly sticky note on top, but good enough.
Hunting Down the Moments
Started simple: Just wrote down “GOAL” and the team name whenever someone scored. Like “32 – Goal – Spurs”. Flipping channels caught me out once though – missed Maddison’s booking. Grumbled a bit.
Then tried adding more detail:
- For the Forest penalty shout around 58 mins? Scribbled “PEN? – Forest”.
- Son’s goal ruled out later? Wrote “GOAL DISALLOW – Spurs – VAR”. All caps felt important.
- Key saves? “SAVE – Vicario – 75” felt right.
Kept it minimal – just time, event type, team, maybe a player name if super important like the disallowed goal. Wasn’t writing novels here, just quick codes I could understand later. Was kinda fun, like my own little shorthand.
Building the Actual Timeline
Match finished, notebook looked like a toddler wrote it, but I got the goods. Pulled out my laptop, fired up Google Docs – nothing fancy. Just needed lines and time markers.

Here’s how I built it:
- Made a big centered Title: “Spurs vs Forest – Live Timeline – My View”. Felt official.
- Drew a long vertical line down the middle of the page using the underline trick (______) with spaces for entries. Bit wonky, but worked.
- Started adding my scribbles in order:
- Placed “0:00 KICK OFF” at the top.
- Clicked down a few lines, added “32:00 GOAL – Spurs” next to the line.
- Clicked further down, added “45:00 + 3 – HALF TIME”.
- Kept going, popping in my notes like “58:00 PEN SHOUT? – Forest” and later “68:00 GOAL DISALLOW – Spurs (Son – VAR)” lower down.
- For subs, just did “71:00 SUB – Forest (Richards OFF, Wood ON)”.
- Made key moments stand out with bold text, especially the goals and the VAR drama.
- Finished with “90:00 +5 FULL TIME” way down at the bottom.
Done and Dusted
And that was basically it! Took maybe 20 minutes after the match, including hunting for the notepad. My doc looks a bit like a simple family tree but for goals and cards! It’s ugly, it’s basic, but it works perfectly for what I wanted – a clear scroll showing exactly how the game unfolded minute by minute, based purely on what I saw and jotted down. No complicated apps, no signing up anywhere. Just pen, paper, Google Docs, and paying a bit of extra attention during the game. Feels good to have it all laid out so visually. Might even print it!
