So yesterday I got into this massive argument with my mate Dave about who’s doing better this season – Sunderland or Portsmouth. He swore Pompey were flying high, but I thought Sunderland had ’em beat. Neither of us could remember the actual current standings off the top of our heads. Right then, I figured, “Why guess? Let’s just check the bloody things.”
The Initial “Smart” Idea That Wasn’t So Smart
First instinct? Hit the usual sports news sites I sometimes browse. Typed in something like “Sunderland Portsmouth standings” hoping for a quick scoreboard. Big mistake.
- Got swamped with articles about last week’s match reports.
- Found headlines screaming “historic rivalry” – useless!
- Scrolled forever and saw ads disguised as scores.
- Frustration level peaked when I found predictions about the next game, not the current bloody table!
Total waste of ten minutes. Felt a bit daft.
Getting More Focused (And Admitting I Messed Up)
Okay, lesson learned. Stop messing about. Needed the actual league source. Duh. Obvious, right? Should’ve started there. Why didn’t I? Chalk it up to wanting that instant answer, I guess.
Pulled out my phone again. This time, I searched specifically for “league table EFL League One official” – because that’s the division they’re playing in this season (important detail I almost forgot!).
- Straight away, the search popped up options linking to what looked like the main football league website stuff.
- Clicked the top result that seemed most official (you know, no weird names, just simple).

- Found the Standings section almost right away – usually a big button or menu item.
- Selected “League One” – this time I remembered!
Finally Found What I Needed
The league table page loaded. Nice and simple.
Scanned down the list – clubs sorted by points. Took maybe five seconds to spot them:
- Sunderland: Found ’em sitting in [insert position], with [insert points] points.
- Portsmouth: Spotted ’em a bit [higher/lower], at [insert position] with [insert points] points.
Easy. Just had to read the numbers next to their names. Position points. Done.
What I Should’ve Done From The Start
Honestly? Took maybe 15 minutes total because I mucked about on news sites. If I’d just gone straight to the source right away? Could’ve been under a minute.
So, the clear winner this time:

- Stop messing with sports news if you just want raw league standings.
- Find the official league website – it literally has “league” in the name!
- Pick the right division – EFL League One.
- Click “Standings” or “Table” and find the clubs alphabetically or by position.
- Read the actual numbers – simple.
Dead easy once you cut out the noise. Dave owes me a pint.
