My Hot Mess Trying to Learn Italian with Music (Kora Live)
Woke up feeling super motivated. Saw this “Kora Live Italiano” thing online – some music app meant to help learn Italian through songs. Sounded way cooler than boring flashcards. Grabbed my phone like it was a winning lottery ticket. “Yes! Fun learning!” I thought. Big mistake.

Found the app in the store after searching like 5 different names people mumbled about. Downloaded it. Cranked it open. Bam. All Italian right from the start. No language switch button anywhere obvious. Felt like I walked into the wrong classroom on day one. Clicked around blindly. Found the ‘courses’ or whatever. Picked the first song thing because why not? Some pop song.
Started playing. Music was… okay. Then a lady started talking over it. Fast. Real fast. Sounded excited, I guess? But I caught maybe one word in twenty. Felt sweat forming. Tried to follow these little text prompts flashing on screen. Too fast. Like trying to catch flies with chopsticks. Skipped to another ‘easy’ song. Same deal. Lady rattling off, me staring at my screen like it was speaking alien. Turned up the volume. Nope. Didn’t help. Just louder confusion.
Got frustrated. Thought maybe settings? Dug through menu after menu. Tiny icons, tiny text. Found a “playback speed” option somewhere buried deep. Yes! Slapped that bad boy down to 0.75x speed. Hit play. Lady now sounded like she was talking underwater after way too much cough syrup. Slow… distorted… weird. It was actually worse! Couldn’t understand the slo-mo mush any better than the fast version. Plus the music sounded like a dying record player. Gave up after thirty seconds of audio torture.
Tried one more angle. Maybe just listen without trying so hard? Let it wash over me? Threw headphones on, picked a different playlist labeled “Chill”. Laid back. Two minutes later… I’d zoned out completely thinking about what to cook for dinner. Spaghetti, obviously. Was I learning? Not even a little bit. Just hearing Italian noise while contemplating carbs.
Uninstalled the app before lunch. Felt like I broke 3 Italian records: “Most Confusion Per Minute,” “Fastest App Deletion,” and “Biggest Drop in Motivation Before Noon.” Total time invested? Maybe 45 minutes. Most of that was clicking angrily.

So what’s the takeaway?
- Jumped in way too deep. Got excited, ignored the giant “Here Be Dragons: All Italian” sign.
- Assumed ‘fun’ meant ‘easy’. Wrong. Fun just meant music. Music can still be hard.
- Tech settings aren’t magic. Slowing down garbled speech just makes slow garble. Like putting whipped cream on instant noodles.
- Passive listening? Maybe works if you’re already kinda okay. For me? Pure background noise.
It basically felt like trying to build Ikea furniture with the manual upside down. All the pieces might be there, but good luck making sense of it without tearing your hair out. Went back to my dusty Italian phrasebook. At least I know it’s boring torture.
