Okay, so I had this baking project in mind, and the recipe called for ingredients in tablespoons. But, my kitchen scale only measures in pounds. So I was like, “Shoot, how many pounds are in a tablespoon anyway?” It’s not something I usually think about!

My Little Experiment Begins

First, I grabbed my phone and did a quick search. I found some general conversions, but it seemed a little… imprecise. I mean, a tablespoon of flour is way different than a tablespoon of butter, right? So I decided to get my hands dirty and figure this out for myself.

Getting Down to Business

  • First, I zeroed out my kitchen scale. Made sure it was reading 0.00 pounds. Gotta be accurate, you know?
  • Then, I took a standard tablespoon measure – the kind you use for baking, not just any old spoon from the drawer.
  • Next, scoop the ingredients I want to measure. I tested with water first.
  • Finally, placed it on the scale.

The Results(more or less)

After testing with water, I found that one tablespoon is close to 0.03 pounds. It wasn’t a super exact number, changing a bit each time, but it was always around that ballpark.

I realized this is going to be different for every *, sugar, butter… they all have different densities. So, the “0.03 pounds” thing is really just a rough guide. If you need to be super precise, you might need to do some specific conversions for each ingredient. But for my baking, knowing it’s in the neighborhood of 0.03 pounds was good enough!

I finished my baking finally!
