Okay, so I had this idea to make a custom t-shirt. I’d seen some cool designs online, and I thought, “Why not try making my own?” It seemed like a fun little project.
Getting Started
First, I needed a plain white t-shirt. I picked up a cheap one from a local store. Nothing fancy, just a basic cotton tee. Then, I needed a design. I’m not the best artist, so I decided to keep it simple. I was going for a geometric, “walls” inspired by some modern art I like. I mean, very very simple.
The Messy Part
Next up, fabric paint. I grabbed a few different colors – black, gray, and a touch of dark red, just to make it pop a little.I also got some masking tape.
I used the tape for my design to the t-shirt,
I laid the t-shirt flat on a table (with some cardboard inside to prevent the paint from bleeding through), and then got to work taping. I was going for a kind of abstract, blocky design, so I just started sticking tape in different angles and shapes.
Once I was happy with the taped design, it was time to paint. I carefully applied the fabric paint to the exposed areas of the t-shirt. I used a small brush for the edges and a larger one to fill in the bigger spaces. Honestly, It was harder than I thought to keep the paint within the lines.
The Big Reveal
After painting all the sections, I had to wait for it to dry. This was the hardest part! I’m super impatient. I think I waited a good few hours, maybe even overnight, just to be *, very very carefully, I started peeling off the masking tape.
And… it actually looked pretty good! The lines weren’t perfect, of course. There were a few smudges where the paint had seeped under the tape. But overall, I was really happy with how it turned out. It had that cool, handmade vibe I was going for.
Final Touches
I followed the instructions on the fabric paint to heat-set the design. I think I used an iron with a cloth over the top.
It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s unique, and I made it myself. That’s what counts, right?
