When there is too much uric acid in the body the pH balance of the body moves to being acidic from neutral. Uric acid presents itself in the form of diseases like gout, arthritis and different kidney problems. Dietician Sheela Sherawat of Diet Clinic advises healthy diet plan to combat high uric acid.
Uric acid is formed by the body due to breakdown of substances known as purines. Purines is produced by tissues in course of normal functioning. In normal course uric acid dissolves in the blood and is filtered out by the kidney. However when the kidneys are unable to filter out all the uric acid or there is more of purine in the blood, the uric acid starts to form crystals and ends up in kidney or joints.
High uric acid levels can cause severe health distress. Complications of high uric acid include heart disease and kidney failure. The best way to cure uric acid naturally is to limit consumption of food rich in purine. It is possible to reduce uric acid by consuming less meat, sugar, and starch. Increasing water consumption is also beneficial and part of best diet plan.
While usually uric acid is linked to protein consumption uric acid diets also avoid sugar and sugary drinks. Research has found that fructose in particular can cause a spike in uric acid levels.
The most common symptoms of high uric acid in the body include –

Thereafter the pain can persist for days or weeks. If left untreated gout can affect the joint permanently.
Symptoms related to the skin – After few years of high uric acid in the blood it may form lumps under the skin. This lump of crystallized uric acid is called tophus and is usually not painful. During attacks of gout they become tender.
