It is said that food is a form of medicine, and that is absolutely right for the control of diabetes. Some foods contain powerful nutrients that reduce blood sugar, regulate appetite and protect the heart all of which are important in controlling diabetes. Dietician Sheela Sherawat of Diet Clinic has the following insights about diabetic diet plan

 

Fish – Fish is an all important part of diabetic diet. Fish such as salmons, mackerel, pomfret, sardines contain omega 3 fatty acids which are very important for a healthy heart.  Number of studies have suggested that those who eat large quantities of fish high in omega 3 have less incidence of heart attacks. Not only beneficial fats but fish is also good source of protein which keeps the body of a diabetic healthy.

 

Green leafy vegetables – Leafy greens are nutrient dense super foods. They are also very low in calories and contain very little carbohydrates. This makes them ideal part of a diabetes diet since a salad can make us full with very few calories. Spinach and broccoli are good sources of many essential vitamins and minerals. They also contain lot of Vitamin C which improves fasting blood sugar.

 

Cinnamon – It is a spice that is very powerful antioxidant. Cinnamon has been shown in several studies to increase sensitivity to insulin and lower blood sugar. The HbA1c test which measures blood sugar averages over past 90 days found that patients who included cinnamon as part of diabetes diet had marked improvement when compared to the control group. However take care to consume only Ceylon cinnamon which is low in coumarin.

 

Eggs – Eggs have multiple health benefits. Regular consumption of egg has been shown to reduce inflammation and improve sensitivity of insulin. Egg also improves good cholesterol or HDL cholesterol. Eggs are also rich in antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which help improve vision.

 

Olive oil – Following a Mediterranean diet with plenty of olive oil may reduce risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as half. It is far healthier in this respect than a diet low in fat. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids which keeps the body healthy and contains plenty of antioxidants.

 

Walnut – This diabetes super food contains polyunsaturated fats known as alpha-linoleic acid. It also contains generous amounts of omega 3, fiber and several phytochemicals which are powerful antioxidants. These can help to stop and fight diabetes.
